Topic: "Emily Dickinson's Garden"
Guest Speaker: Annick Hivert-Carthew

Annick will present a Biography of E. Dickinson with slides of her home, family, and garden. A look into her love of flowers; which ones she mentions in her poetry, their interpretation and purposes. Along with how her garden was recreated according to her letter and poems.

Handouts:
- E. Dickinson's fertilizer recipe
- Excerpts from poems according to seasons
- A list of herbs and flowers and their meaning.

Annick will also make available for purchase her book Proud to Work, a pictorial history of the Michigan Civilian Conservation Corps"@$20.00 plus 6% MI Sales Tax. 20% of all proceeds will be donated back to the Society, for future projects and programs.

Troy Garden Walk
Troy Historical Museum

The 34th Annual Garden Walk 2008 will be sponsored by the Troy Garden Club on Wednesday, July 9. The club is a member of the Woman's National Farm & Garden Association. The walk - on the grounds of five homes plus the Troy Historical Museum - will run from 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM and 5:30 - 8:30 PM. Also featured will be a raffle and a many-vendor boutique as well as the club's own Fabulous Finds sales area on the grounds of the museum, 60 W. Wattles Rd. at Livernois. Tickets are $12 on tour day or $10 in advance. Presale tickets are available at Telly's Greenhouse, Wilkop Landscape, Uncle Luke's Feed Store, and the Troy Historical Museum. Proceeds from the event will benefit many area organizations.

LANDSCAPE & TURF DIAGNOSTICS TOUR


MSU Extension - Genesee is sponsoring a Landscape and Turf Diagnostic Tour of the Applewood Estate in Flint, Thursday, July 10, 2008, 6-8pm. This hands-on workshop is meant for commercial pesticide applicators, landscape and nursery professionals, and anyone interested in improving their ability to diagnose landscape issues. 2 MDA credits for either Commercial Core, Category 3A, Category 3B or Category 6 have been applied for. Clarkston Farm and Garden Club Garden Walk
The Clarkston Garden Walk, featuring six unique Clarkston area gardens, will be held Wednesday, July 16.
Start the tour at the Community Education Center on Waldon Road

The box luncheon and garden tour, sponsored by the Clarkston Farm and Garden Club and Clarkston Community Education, features artists and music at six area gardens. Lunch is available between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with a gift boutique on site. The gardens are open noon to 7 p.m.
Start the tour at the Community Education Center on Waldon Road. Present your ticket to receive a map to the gardens. If you are not having lunch, you will proceed to the gardens. A Garden Club member will be at each site to greet visitors.
Tickets are $20 for the tour; $22 includes lunch. Profits fund community beautification projects, scholarships, and garden education endeavors.

A Summer Celebration
Michigan State University's Tollgate Farm Educational Center is having "A Summer Celebration."
12 mile and Meadowbrook rds. in Novi Michigan

Saturday July 19, 10 am. - 3pm. No admission charge. FREE

You are invited to come and enjoy a wonderful day strolling thru Tollgate's gardens. Our Gardens are all located close to the buildings and parking lot. The Tollgate garden volunteers will be available to answer your gardening questions. Once again the gardens will be decorated with beautiful hanging quilts. There will be ongoing gardening demonstrations during the day as well as free refreshments. The Tollgate Quilters have lovingly made a beautiful quilt with pillows for our raffle.

Bio-control of Japanese Beetle Presentation
11-12 PM at the Lajko Park Pavilion
immediately adjacent to Willow Metropark Golf Course, 22900 Huron River Drive, New Boston, MI.
There is no charge to attend.

Dr. David Smitley, Landscape Entomologist at Michigan State University, will present recent research on the biological control of Japanese Beetle with a soil borne protozoan pathogen, Ovavesicula popilliae. In addition to the presentation, attendees will be given a number of adult Japanese Beetles, from golf courses that have a high Ovavesicula popilliae level of infection, as a means to distribute more widely the pathogen through infected adults.

Our presenters will share their story, of how they started Ashton Orchards. Explaining how the business of apples has evolved over the years, and what new variety of apples we'll soon be seeing. They also sell peaches, plums, pears, sweet corn, pumpkins and other vegetables at their Orchard in Ortonville.
