Our guest speakers Deb and Ron Stallings are the business owners and creators of "Gourdology". The couple crate beautiful colorful decorative gourd objects and sell them at local venues. Their business website is Gourdology.com

The Troy Garden Club meets at Bid Beaver United Methodist Church at 3753 John R in Troy. The church is located just south of Wattles Road on the west side of the street.

OPEN MEETING PROGRAM Garbage In, Rich Soil Out. Let's Go Organic is the topic of Hill and Dale Garden Club's September 9 program. Jane and Allan Geisler, both master composters, teach in the Wayne County Master Gardeners program, Wayne County Master Composter program and gardening classes at Henry Ford Community College. An Advanced Master Gardener, Jane Geisler also writes three monthly garden columns for the Dearborn Press and Guide newspaper and two garden club newsletters. Their presentation is open to the public at Hill and Dale's meeting at the visitor center of Heritage Park, on Farmington Road between 10 and 11 Mile Roads in Farmington Hills. Program starts at 7:30.

  invasive shrub removal workday at Bald Mountain Recreation Area
Glossy buckthorn, a non-native wetland invader, doesn't stand a chance to take over if we keep removing it from this fen. Please join us in this effort! Meet at the East Graham Boat Launch parking lot on the north side of Predmore Road in the park's North Unit. ***Waterproof boots, either knee-high rubber boots or hip waders, are recommended for this site, but not necessary. Rubber boots are available to borrow, upon request. Old boots that you don't mind getting muddy will work too.

  HOME COMPOSTING WORKSHOPS

3910 W. Webster Rd., Royal Oak (under a tent; in the gardens) Presented by SOCWA Master Composter Volunteers - FREE
Two free home composting workshops are scheduled for Thursday, September 16, 2010 at the SOCWA gardens (3910 W. Webster, Royal Oak). The first workshop is scheduled for 4:00 - 5:00 pm, and the second at 6:00-7:00 pm.
The workshops will be presented by Master Composter Volunteers, coordinated through SOCWA, the Southeastern Oakland County Water Authority. Workshops are out-of-doors under a tent, and emphasize hands-on demonstration. Compost bins from the SOCWA compost demonstration site will be open for observation.
Topics covered will include: Materials for composting; building the pile, compost bin choices, maintaining the pile, and using compost to benefit plants and the watershed.

  Clinton Clean Up 2010
Help Us Improve the Health of Our Waterways!

Planning is underway for this year's Clinton Clean Up. Please consider joining us in one of many capacities; site recommendations, co-coordinator or volunteer. If you don't have a team, we can help create one for your community, organization or business. The Clinton River Watershed Council will also assist in promoting and publicizing an event.

Volunteers will descend on stretches of the Clinton River and trailways on Saturday, September 18, 2010, to pick up debris, remove invasive species, and stencil storm drains. Historically, over 300 volunteers have participated in Clinton Clean Up. As clean up sites are determined, complete listings of Clinton Clean-Up events will be included on our website at www.crwc.org along with promotion on our CRWC listserve.

Michigan Invasive Plants Council Japanese Barberry Education and Removal Event Hosted by Oakland County Parks and Recreation Rose Oaks County Park

Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii), a popular shrub introduced in the late 1800s, has spread from cultivated landscapes into adjacent natural areas. At this Japanese barberry education and removal workshop: Learn to distinguish between acceptable barberries and problematic ones. See what the Michigan Invasive Plant Council is doing to qualify the invasiveness of Japanese barberry and its cultivars. Experience first hand what Rose Oaks County Park is doing to manage barberry in ecologically sensitive areas. Contribute to the barberry removal plan for Rose Oaks County Park.
