For many years Henry has been the Director of the Department of Environment for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. He has shared his expertise in environmental science and traditional wisdom with numerous international, national, and local organizations, including the International Joint Commission's Great Lakes Science Advisory Board. He has also mentored many young members of the First Nations, teaching them the ways of modern science, strengthened by the insights and values of his own people. Henry is a captivating speaker who will provide a unique perspective on our ecological restoration efforts. Friday Evening Program – The Power of Story 7:30pm – 9:30pm Three great storytellers – author Keith Taylor from the University of Michigan, poet and essayist Alison Swan, and Michigan Radio’s The Environment Report Senior Editor/Correspondent Lester Graham – will join us for this engaging program on storytelling. Saturday, Keynote Speaker – Gerould Wilhelm Dr. Gerould Wilhelm is the principal botanist/ecologist at Conservation Design Forum. He has become a pre-eminent botanist in his field, conducting floristic inventories and field evaluations of ecosystems throughout North America. This experience has culminated in his co-authoring Plants of the Chicago Region, only one of two such works in the world rated as “excellent” by Robert Frodin, author of A Geographic Guide to the Floras of the World. Not only a leader in the promotion of a philosophy of environmental sustainability with design professionals, Jerry donates his time to work with volunteer stewards to teach them monitoring methods and data analysis, ecological restoration activities, and plant identification throughout the Midwest.

Simeone - Horticulturist, Author, Lecturer - Oyster Bay, New York Even though your plants lay in gentle slumber beneath snow-covered boughs, winter is one of the most beautiful times to appreciate the garden. Blustery weather packs snow on plants with an interesting habit and makes twigs of shrubs glisten with icy crystals. Add in colorful berries or fruit and the garden becomes a hidden treasure. Join horticulturist and author Vincent Simeone in searching out the most stunning winter specimens. Gardens of Distinction Dr. Robert Schutzki - Professor of Horticulture - Michigan State University Good design is the very heart of why we do what we do. However, too often plant lovers get caught up with flashy, new introductions at the expense of the over-all garden or landscape design. Dr. Robert Schutzki, Michigan State University Landscape Professor will share methods for utilizing plants to their best possible advantage whether in a captivating combination, backdrop or as an individual feature. Great Landscape Evergreens Vincent A. Simeone - Horticulturist, Author, Lecturer - Oyster Bay, New York. Today, more than ever, homeowners desire privacy in their garden. With increased pest problems of some of our favorite conifers such as Canadian hemlock, seeking appropriate alternatives is necessary. Many species of conifers and broadleaf evergreens can thrive in varying environmental conditions, offering beauty, function and privacy in the landscape. Brilliantly illustrated with a cavalcade of colorful images, Simeone will reveal tips for selection and design that can be found in his book, Great Landscape Evergreens recently published by Ball Publishing Co. What Goes Up? Ann Hancock, Michigan State University Department of Horticulture Vines are an integral part of a well-balanced garden design. Not only are they colorful and versatile, vines can be utilized as accents, backdrops, and even ground covers. During this presentation with Michigan State University Horticulturist Ann Hancock, you will learn how to use annual and perennial vines to get more impact out of your landscape design.

5/16/09, 9 AM - 11 AM Spring Plant Exchange Here is a great way to add to your collection of perennials. It will be held inside at the Royal Oak Senior/Community Center, so come rain or shine! Open to the public. Tables will be provided. No trees or woody shrubs. No selling allowed. You can trade or give away plants. Bring your extra plants LABELED and in pots or plastic baggies. It helps move things along if you make a list of the plants you have, and a list of some of the plants you would like to get (some people wear their list around their neck for better visibility). This is one of the best times of the year to divide perennials. Dig them now while they’re small enough to handle. They’ll adjust to their new location faster with growth just starting. Sponsored by the Royal Oak Garden Club and Royal Oak Recreation. Where: Mahany/Meininger Senior/Community Center, 3500 Marais Rd., Room 3, Royal Oak, MI 48073 Contact: Penny Vansen, 313-861-6579
