Guest Speaker: Annick Hivert-Carthew
Annick will present a Biography of E. Dickinson with slides of her
home, family, and garden. A look into her love of flowers; which
ones she mentions in her poetry, their interpretation and purposes.
Along with how her garden was recreated according to her letter and
poems.
Handouts:
- E. Dickinson's fertilizer recipe
- Excerpts from poems according to seasons
- A list of herbs and flowers and their meaning.
Annick will also make available for purchase her book Proud to
Work, a pictorial history of the Michigan Civilian Conservation
Corps"@$20.00 plus 6% MI Sales Tax. 20% of all proceeds will be
donated back to the Society, for future projects and programs.

Troy Garden Walk
Troy Historical Museum
The 34th Annual Garden Walk 2008 will be sponsored by the Troy Garden Club
on Wednesday, July 9. The club is a member of the Woman's National Farm &
Garden Association. The walk - on the grounds of five homes plus the Troy
Historical Museum - will run from 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM and 5:30 - 8:30 PM.
Also featured will be a raffle and a many-vendor boutique as well as the
club's own Fabulous Finds sales area on the grounds of the museum, 60 W.
Wattles Rd. at Livernois. Tickets are $12 on tour day or $10 in advance.
Presale tickets are available at Telly's Greenhouse, Wilkop Landscape, Uncle
Luke's Feed Store, and the Troy Historical Museum. Proceeds from the event
will benefit many area organizations.

Last year's Show drew hundreds of folks of all ages who share a
common love of summer flowers . . . and we expect even more at the 2008
Daylily Heaven Flower Show! Show set-ups will begin with folks and flowers
arriving at 8:30 am.
ALL VISITORS to the DAYLILY HEAVEN FLOWER SHOW will receive a ballot to vote
on all Division 2 blooms! Visit Daylily Heaven Flower Show and choose a
winner! We invite and encourage the public to participate and enter their
daylilies!
Many friendly faces from the Daylily Club will be on hand to help the public
with their multiple entries. A Special 2008 SMDS Award is "STOUT SILVER
MEDAL WINNER" - for the Best Daylily entered that has been awarded a Stout
Medal by the American Hemoracalis Society -- refer to AHS web page for
daylily cultivars which are Stout winners.

Both Divisions have lots of categories to enter; Awards and Prizes include
top-quality, beautiful hand-cut crystal bowls, vases and objects d'art!
Everyone can enter the SHOW! Just bring the entire flower stem of blooming
daylily flowers, including any unopened buds on the stems (Division 1 / with
12 Categories) - AND - OR - PLUS - bring the single daylily flower blooms
(Division 2 / with 13 Categories) !
Exhibits are accepted from 8:30 am until 11:00 am

Clarkston Farm and Garden Club Garden Walk
The Clarkston Garden Walk, featuring six unique Clarkston area gardens, will
be held Wednesday, July 16.
Start the tour at the Community Education Center on Waldon Road
The box luncheon and garden tour, sponsored by the Clarkston Farm and Garden
Club and Clarkston Community Education, features artists and music at six
area gardens. Lunch is available between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with a gift
boutique on site. The gardens are open noon to 7 p.m.
Start the tour at the Community Education Center on Waldon Road. Present
your ticket to receive a map to the gardens. If you are not having lunch,
you will proceed to the gardens. A Garden Club member will be at each site
to greet visitors.
Tickets are $20 for the tour; $22 includes lunch. Profits fund community
beautification projects, scholarships, and garden education endeavors.

August 1-3 is the weekend to save if you want to see
fabulous gardens and join other gardeners in a fun-

Explaining how the business of apples has evolved over the years, and what

I am the president and founder of Southeast Michigan Butterfly
Association, Advanced Master Gardener, member of NABA (North
American Butterfly Association), WAM (Wildflower Association of
Michigan), and Michigan Entomological Society. My yard is certified
by Monarch Watch as a Monarch Waystation and as a Backyard Wildlife
Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.

Topic: "Hummingbirds"
Guest Speaker: Allan Chartier
Bio: Allen Chartier is the Project Director for the Great
Lakes HummerNet, a research project aimed at learning more about
hummingbirds with the help of volunteer observers throughout
Michigan, and investigating wintering hummingbirds in Ohio and
Indiana. He has been a birder since age 11, and has traveled
extensively to see and photograph birds, especially hummingbirds.
Allen has been involved with numerous research projects, including
the hawk watch at Holiday Beach, Ontario, the North American
Migration Count, the Michigan Bird Survey, and many others. He has
authored several publications including Hawks of Holiday Beach
(2002), Birds of Detroit (1997), and his paper, Twenty-two Years of
Hummingbird Migration at Holiday Beach, Ontario was published in
Ontario Birds in 1996. Most recently, Allen completed A Birders
Guide to Michigan (2004) for the American Birding Association, was a
contributing author to the National Geographic Complete Birds of
North America (2005), and was one of two editorial reviewers for the
new Handheld Birds (2006), an electronic field guide for Palm
Pilots, from National Geographic. Allen was principal passerine
bander, and the only hummingbird bander at Holiday Beach Migration
Observatory from 1997-2003. He founded the Great Lakes HummerNet in
summer 2001 after obtaining his U.S. Federal Master Permit for
banding hummingbirds.
Great Lakes HummerNet program
description:
The Great Lakes HummerNet is a new project, initiated in Autumn 2001
by Allen Chartier, designed to learn more about Michigans
hummingbirds by enlisting the help of volunteer observers throughout
the state, and to study winter hummingbirds in Michigan, Ohio, and
Indiana. Data is gathered through observation as well as banding
studies. This presentation will describe the research objectives of
the project, tell you how you can participate, provide helpful hints
on how to attract and feed hummingbirds, and review what has been
learned so far.
